After the sterling The Spy Who Loved Me the Bond team took a spectacular nosedive with Roger Moore’s risible fourth 007 entry, arguably the worst film in the franchise. Humour and fantasy are essential Bond ingredients but when you have 007 riding through St Mark’s Square on an inflatable hovercraft, Jaws falling in love and a shameless Star Wars-inspired space battle, something’s gone seriously wrong. There are some saving graces thanks to a staggering skydiving opening sequence, a suspenseful night-time museum clash and John Barry’s atmospheric score but Christopher Wood’s sloppy script and demeaning comedic tone means that this Bond certainly leaves you with a licence to cringe.
