The Electric Theatre, Los Angeles, is the first purpose built cinema.

1903

The Great Train Robbery & Life of an American Fireman, two of the earliest American narrative films, are released.

1904

Narrative-based films become increasingly popular.

William Fox opens his first theatre in New York.

The Automatic Vaudeville Company is formed.

1905

The term “nickelodeon” is coined to describe storefront theatres exhibiting motion pictures.

Entertainment magazine, Variety, is first published.

1906

The first cartoon, Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, is produced.

1907

The Kalem Film Company are formed. On December 7th, they distribute Ben-Hur.

The Essany Film Manufacturing Company are formed.

1908

The Motion Picture Patents Company (MPCC) is established.

The Cameraphone, combining sound with pictures, plays in vaudeville.

1909

The National Board of Censorship is established.

Les Misérables, released by Vitagraph, is the first American feature film.
